This is a WARNING for all 3D Artist looking for an internship.

Hello my name is Zancois Rice, I'm a starving artist with dreams of becoming a professional 3D Modeler/Animator. I have a degree in Computer Animation and have been working with 3D Studio Max software for 4 years now.

I went to an interview at 3D Mirage with hopes of becoming an intern. (What better way to improve my skills and get the necessary experience needed to work in the industry other than an internship). What I discovered was not an internship at all. 3D Mirage is a 3D Max Training facility, and the actual internship position was false. 3D Mirage is looking for students to join their school, and their falsely advertising a internship position to lure people into their program. First they try to sell you on the holographic imaging hardware, by showing you this power point presentation of 3D models and other well known 3d demos, and the usage of them by the holographic projector. Then they tell you to come back in a few days, Model a mouse (so they can assess your modeling abilities) and sit in on a free training. They show you basic Morph Targets and basic Reactor Rag-doll simulation. The Rag-doll part was cool, but I could have simply done the reactor tutorial that comes with max. Then after you take your "Free Training" they pull out of the room and tell you that your skills need improvement, and you should buy into their training. which by the way cost $4000, and then "maybe" you can freelance for them. OK maybe I'm not the best modeler in the world, but I'm pretty confident in my ability to get the job done, and "YO" I thought I was here for a internship, so that I can learn to be a better 3D Modeler. And shouldn't training of a companies employee be free? I don't know about you, but I think 3D Mirage is a scam and aspiring 3D artist should not waste their time going there unless you are rich and have money to waste. And if you are looking to learn Max you can receive the same training if not better from an accredited college or technical school, where you will receive a degree upon completion.

P.S. I hope I don't get shot for writing this letter.

If your intersted in what others though of their experience please vist this site: http://www.cgchannel.com/forum/viewthread?thread=13062

Thank you so much for posting. I've been looking for an internship and was contacted by them. Guess I'll pass on this one.

Whew!

Hey I came across this posting and I find it pretty funny because I am currently taking the 3D course there (with 3D mirage aka 3D Training). Im sorry to hear about your experience with them. However, mine was quite different. At no time was an internship guaranteed to me, nor was I asked to model a mouse to see how far along my skills were( although I did see a guy there a few weeks ago modeling a mouse, I wonder if that was you?!) I was invited to attend the Free class, as an intro to students who were interested in taking the course. They did talk about the possibility of an internship, but also pointed out that at no moment were these internships guaranteed at the end of the course. As for the price, it was about $3600, and not $4000. The classes are pretty cool, and I am learning a lot. You also get certification at the end of the course. I guess it depends on the person.

sorry you had a bad experience :(

I was told that I would be an intern for 3 months during this time I would have to take their classes and pay them for the internship, they then told me I would be commissioned for freelance work. When I told them that I could not afford this they said that I would be called for future work. This did not happen. The company went as far as to offer me a freelance gig as long as I took down my posting. I denied it. The advertisment said Internship not training. The point of the matter is that it is false advertising and misleading.

Besides you agreed to pay them for training this doesn't apply to you.
