i'm guessing that mostly everyone has heard about the new, action packed Looney Tunes show called "Loonatics", and if you haven't then get ready for a surprise of awesomely, kick-ass proportions. though i have fond recollections of the old looney tunes, i have trouble relating to them in these modern times. being an angst filled teenager, i often find myself looking for something to vent my anger and frustration, and this new show looks like the answer. the extreme answer. forget the old looney tunes where slapstick, parody and all around good fun reigned supreme, because they are back to kick you in the throat. there is no time to be funny when you're giving mean tough ass looks to the camera, and saying such cool phrases as "what's up doc" in a voice more sinister than satan himself would say. and of course, since it's set in the future, nothing is ever humorous, too many computers, flying cars, and dark shadows everywhere. i'm pretty sure this will be the best show in the history of the universe, after all, how could the WB be wrong?
well anyways, here's some more drawings...

here's a small scene from the animated short i'm working on. it's the first and only scene i have colored, i just wanted to see how it would look. the background is just a crappy sketch i slapped on there. it kinda loads choppy and slow at first, but just wait it through and right click and play it again. i'm sure you all know that but i just don't want "man that sucks, it's all choppy." so ya, i hope you enjoy it.
i will appreciate any comments or critiques

Man Bri that is awsome. I honestly can't pick anything in it that i would change. It's perfect the way it is. Maybe someone else here can pick out something that i can't see but hot damn it rocks. I want to see the rest.
Is this for school or for ur self??
I also see that it seems u did this in flash, is that soo and if it is did u do all the drawings in frame by frame.
Awsome work man keep it coming, I'm a fan.

03-24-2005, 07:14 PM
hey thanks a lot dan and damage. i'm glad you liked my work. everything is traditionally animated. i drew every frame by hand, cleaned it up, then scanned them in, colored them in photoshop, and then put it all together in flash. this is my own personal project that i started in my animation class after i finished all of the assignments early. i have been working on it for about a year now, and it'll probably take me another year it finish. but i love every minute of it. i might clean up some more scenes soon but i'm not sure yet. thanks again!
any more comments or critiques would be appreciated.
oh, and here's a little short thing i did for my flash class. i waited till the very last minute to do it, so you can tell where i ran out of time and just started putting goofy drawings in it. it has music so turn on your speakers, please. this is all drawn in flash. it's pretty goofy. i hope you enjoy it. any feedback is welcome.

In the first batch I think the butt on the left drawing has a cool solid-drawing arc to it, and between the both of them there's a talented use/exploration of just how versatile that eye size/shape can be on your character.
In the second batch I love the Grinch-like sneer and the line of action is very clear.

First page - all your stuff has a great looseness, but unless this was an inbetween frame the staging is a bit akward. We all know what his motivation is, but behind the limbs the head and face is still a huge tool communicator and you've essentially hidden it. If you're going for the "casual, don't allow him to see what he's doing so as to set up for gag involving harm done by the mouse," why not have him look up at the ceiling? It'd be easier if this was ever in moving form to transition to his reaction.
The mice are great. I know that's not constructive, but it's just a nice job of the expression echoing the gesture. That 3/4 in the top-right would be a cool silhouette, especially though if you'd eek his bicep out to the side -just- a little more. You don't have to go way out and make another negative space (it'd be cool but maybe not show his tenseness as well as you've got it now) but at least break up the line on his back that the arm's currently tangenting.
brien
06-25-2005, 02:31 PM
thanks again scattered... but actually the first drawing with the cat reaching in the bowl... it was more like he wouldve been looking at the mouse and grinning or something as hes reaching in, but then he heard the door open or some one coming from the other room.. so he turns and looks quickly. thats the idea for that sketch.. yea i guess it could be unclear to someone who didnt know what i was going for. usually when i do sketches i think as if i was animating a scene or somehting.. so i can put some real emotion and motive the poses and expression.. instead of just drawing a character standing there smiling at the viewer. not that theres anything wrong with that. but thats the way i like to sketch.
heh.. and yes.. you are right about the tangent. and thanks again for all of your comments!

Awsome work as always B, I have a ?? for u. In ur goofy walk swf., did u animate that using motion paths and if not how did u get it to look sooo smooth.
I look forward to seeing more of ur work. Any big projects in the work??
brien
07-09-2005, 03:49 PM
thanks damage. i was wondering what happened to you, i havent seen you post anything in a while. what have you been working on lately?
i didnt use any motion paths on the walk cycle, everything is just symbols that are motion tweened. although a motion path would be a good idea.
as for any big projects.. i was working on a short, but i've decided to scrap it for now. i have it storyboarded out and i have a bunch of pencil tests, but i havent worked on it for a while. but for now, im going to enter an animation to that 10 second club competition thing. i actually just started on it today. should be fun.

Hey Brien, great work as always, u do some awsome facial expresions. How do u go about doing them. Do u use a mirror?? Yeah i have been lagging in posting anything. Just been soo busy. I finally landed an animation job and man do i luv it. The thing is that when i get home i'm soo beat that all i do is go to sleep then wake up early again to hit it. I'm going to try and see if i can start it up all over again. Find some time to get my sketch thread back up to par.
Re the motion path, I heard from some guy that his friend used motion paths to get reall nice arcks and movement. So when i saw ur walk cycle i thought wow that is smooth as hell how did he do that.
Re me and my projects?.... Well i have a lot of them in the can and not finished. I need to make some time to get to them. I especially need to finishe the book that I've been working on. hahahah Deadlines really never die even when u get the job that u want.
Well i'll stop hoggin up ur thread. Keep up the awsome sketching and i can't wait to see what else u come with. I especially look forward the the flash stuff u do. Lates.

good to hear that got an animation job. im sure youre doin great stuff. whats the job youre doin? as for the the facial expressions, i really dont look in the mirror all that much. i do when i can a face quite right, but i usually just draw what i feel. most of my expressions arent really that realistic anyways, theyre mostly way over exaggerared. man scoob, it must have sucked having a fat bear for a teacher. haha. but anways, heres some from today.....

heh, thanks guys. i wouldn't say im a big batman fan, but i like the character. i really like the first two movies, but that's about it, i don't read the comics or anything like that. ive been meaning to see the newest batman movie but i haven't got around to it.
anyways, here's a new one from today. i could'nt get the "s" logo to look right on his buldging chest, so i left it out. so it looks kinda weird withough it. do you think i should try to put it in? i guess its not quite superman withouth the "s".

Hey Brien,
I do think that the Sups needs his logo on his chest, or else he looks some wierdo in spandex. Funny how the logo has been branded into most of our minds.
I dig the Bats to looks funny.
Re the batman movie that just came out. I think u would enjoy this one. They didn't take it lightly and for a long time Batman fan i like many think that this is the Batman movie that many Batfans have been long waiting. I highly recommend it.

10-20-2005, 08:59 PM
hahah... man, i would love to see stalone as superman in the new movie. of course, it would totally ruin it on a serious level, but it would shoot the hilarity factor through the roof!
thanks for the advice damage. i agree with you. i think he does need the "s". heh, im glad you liked the batman drawing. yea, i definatly want to see that new batman movie, i've heard nothing but good things about it.
anyways, here's some new sketches from today...

haha, i wouldnt exactly call 18 watches "a lot"... but thanks.
here is a pencil test i was working on for the past couple of days. it was just an idea that popped in my head as i was sketching.. so i decided to animate it. its not finished obviously, i still need to animate the girl. when i put the background in, she will be sitting on a trash can. and i might add a little zip-out for the male cat, but i dont know yet. but yea, i dont know why they are cats again. anyways, my next animation is definatly going to be the old cowboy and the coyote. anyways.. heres the link..

This is really cool and i like the character design alot.
what i meant by 18 views is that you got them so fast.you have 200 and some pageviews with 18 people watching you.It seems to me that a good percent of people who come to your page end up watching you.
I on the other hand have 1000 and some pageviews but only have 13 watchers.Plus you have tv's kyle and danimation watching you.
i dont mean this in a complaining sort of way i mean that you are doing well on da sort of way. :D

DISCLAIMER: it was brouhgt to my attention to a friend off deviantart that this pup bears a striking resemblance to peter puppy of the earthworm jim cast. it was unintentional, but nonetheless, the real (and better) puppy was created by Doug TenNapel.

hey thanks a lot.. i'm glad you like my work. i've definatly got a long way to go and am still learning everyday.. but so far i have taken a few classes at a communtiy college.. traditional animation classes, life drawing, flash and photoshop and all that stuff.. the animation classes i took were pretty laid back so i mostly worked hard at home learning animation myself.. the most helpful thing to me has been studying my tapes and dvds of the looney tunes, tom and jerry, and ren and stimpy to some extent.. the richard williams book helped a lot, mostly with understanding walk cycles.. and the preston blair book is great, too.. both of these books have a lot of important information.. and of course with animation theres lots of trial and error.. dont worry about making pretty drawings, just good and rough ones to learn the motion and timing.. thats pretty much it i guess. i am still a student learning, but these are the things that have helped me so far. i hope it helps :)
so anyways.. heres a quick little version of mickey i did the other day... hope you all like it..

Hey Brien, I really love your stuff. I think its great. I was wondering if you could tell me which Preston Blair books you have that you mentioned in the above post, I have seen some of his stuff and think it could be very helpful if I knew the right books to get. Also, being a beginner, I would love to see how you go from simple form shapes, to your final sketches, if there was anyway you could document that, that would be great!
Also when you say that you watch those DVDs, do you mean you pause the video and draw what you see? I do similar stuff but I find screenshots online.

well there's only one preston blair book, but there are different versions of it. the first one, which is the one i have, can be found at most book stores and on amazon.com..
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1560100842/sr=8-1/qid=1149725004/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-6360440-0867164?%5Fencoding=UTF8
the other version if i remember correctly is a lot bigger.. about the size of an open newspaper.. and can be found at some arts and crafts stores like Michael's. i haven't really seen the inside of it for a long long time.. so i dont remember what the differences are.. John K. says the one on amazon is not as good as the other one but i cant say myself... i think the one on amazon is great and i reference it all the time.. so i guess you can check them both out and see which one you like best.. they both cover the same material.. just slight differences i think.
as for the dvd's, yes i freeze frame them and sketch the drawings.. it helps me figure out motions and techniques from the masters! and i also just frequently go frame by frame on actions i find interesting, even if i dont sketch anything, just to absorb the information.
