Nice work Danimation. I especially liked the second drawing of the lady. Your color shoice is nice too. A daily sketch is a great habit to have. I had gotten into the habit myself, but the last couple of weeks have been a bit busy. I've started picking up the pencil again. As a matter of fact, here's one I did today. It's called "Nobody Wants To Have Fun Anymore".

Hello.
Wonderful stuff! I am now off for the Summer - off is a relative term - with a one man show- two teaching gigs in Europe and a presenatation at SIGGRAPH.
Anyhow I have time to learn Maya and to draw and paint.
So I will have to scan some recent work and put it up- one a day- great!

Great guess on the Metal monster MG! You're right. As for yesterday's sketch, that was just for fun, nothing related. Here is another for today. I'm a bit tired and whipped this off fast. Everyones work is looking awesome. Phacker, that is one funny lookin' scotsman. Love the design. Damage, sweet work as well. That's awesome that you can do different styles. What did you use to color your sketch?

I did this one as quick as i could to get it in before 12am. So it's a bad scan but i still maneged to color it.

Keep up the great work guys.
Danimation I'm painting these in ps. I like to vary my style to try to keep myself flexible to be able to animate anything. My true love tho is to try to animate a little more realistic and not as styilized.(if i spelled that right) I would imagine that styilized animtion like the powerPuff, rugrats etc would be a little more easier. I don't know as of yet but i hope to someday.:)

Re the booth and SD yeah i do plan on having one. Working hard on the flating out the color for my friend so he can finish the book in time. We already sent out our money for the booth just waiting to hear from the SD staff themselfs to see if we got it. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Hey Danimation i don't know all of the details of aquiring a booth. My friend who works with me on the book is in charge of it. He got the app and sent it in, me and my other friend who work on the artwork just forked over our half of the booth money. It was $422.00 each so it adds up too $1266 for our booth. I think that were going to be on the main floor. They also have artist ally which is significantly less. From what i heard about and saw last year is that they have intergrated the independent section with the reg or at least made the independent section the outside border of the convention floor instead of it being it's own section. Which sucks becuase most people wont give independents the time of day. At least this way you end up going by them and if you interested you pick up their stuff.
Here is a link to the SD exibitors section it has the pdf for download down towards the bottom. The app and info. http://www.comic-con.org/Pages/CCIExhibitors.html
As soon as i can get ahold of my friend i'll ask him and see if i can give you a quick answer.

splat, yes, the robot was done in painter. it was pretty quick... 15 minutes or so, that's why it's so rough. thanks!
swank, I can't speak for everyone else, but when I draw, i tend to work in a process. I start out extremely loose, then begin to fine tune the drawing, laying down a tighter line. I also like to use loose shapes as character layouts when I draw. By the way, i got your PM and sent one back... at least I tried to send one back... not sure if it went through or not. Thanks again!

Wow, jchap - I wish you loads of computer trouble in the future - those are my favorites so far - They have that 'animatable' loosey-goosey quality.
Dan - what a great head you have - it's so limber. There's a big difference between your sketches and the Rotten Banana guy - do you switch gears when you color or .. ? And when do you decide which characters you'll animate? Or do you just sketch away?
swank - I guess that's TX landscape, but you captured some of the CA country in spirit (we don't have those craggly things) yes, though, some roll/foothills would get it. very cool.
here's what i did yesterday. i don't expect you to see the improvements, but there are. this thread has been instrumental in reminding me to try again every day.

06-12-2004, 11:14 AM
Sweet work guys! Thanks for the comps too. It's an honor to be compared to Steve's work! Thanks Chap. cjaye, here are the answers to your queries.
The Rotten Banana started with a sketch of the ape, then I decided to color it in flash. When I do flash work I like to make it crisp. I find that flash lends itself well to a UPA, Blair style of art, flat colors and whatnot. Not that mine looks near as good as those collection of works. Usually I just sketch whatever comes of the top of my head. I guess that all of the drawings could be animated, but I never think about that when I'm sketching. I just try and focus on being loose with the lines, as well as trying to be creative. Here is todays sketch. It's bizarre cause I hadn't looked at Chap's work (which is awesome) since I last posted, and now that I do, I see some similarities between his work and this drawing. Crazy! I was inspired to do this by the old General Mills Monster Cereals (Count Chocula...etc). I love that style, so I kinda took some from it and put in a bit of my own in. I have no idea what this guys cereal would be though! :D Cheers

Hey guys, I wish I drew as much as you did, there is some terrific work here!
Since you all love to draw so much, I thought I'd point out a very cool message board: "The Loop". It is a caricature artist haven, with lots of talent. I've recently joined and posted a few images. But unfortunately the site does not have nearly as many members as AWN does. For this reason I thought I'd post the link here, to all you active drawers! Check it out and hopefully we can help it grow. One of the top artists from Mad magazine posts there! If you guys like it, let me know and I"ll start an official thread about it here!

Hi guys,
If I may be so bold as to ask, as I am not much of a render-ist... yet.
Damage, I like the colourization of your work, especially one of your pieces from earlier in this thread "a born artist". What software are you using to do this? It is just Photoshop? I have been wanting to start rendering my stuff more, and am looking for a solution that gives me a look such as that. I am tired of having just line drawings in my portfolio, and would love to get some colour in there to spice it up a bit.
Danimation... You too. I love the brown/sepia looking sketches rendered in marker of some sort. I would love to get some of those markers you are using. Are those the $6.00 a piece pantone markers? I am going to have to go and pick a set of them up, or whatever they are. If you could pass along the make, etc. I would be very appreciative.
Cheers guys, and keep up the good work!!!

when i was younger, around 5 years, i just loved boris valleju's art work (models/fantasy), so i wanted to see if i can draw a pic he had.
it turned really nice in the end though.

Danimation, is that coloured in marker or photoshop, I see the line is coloured and it got me wondering, really nice design style, your characters have that good animation flow, I usually stick to the black line, ...nice drawing shaney, looks like it is charcoal, I find it hard to get that good detail in their with charcoal................tria markers are the best because of the 3 ends but prisma are o.k too, less expensive but harder for some of the detail work.

Very nice render Shany, did you say that was from an existing piece? JeffRM, I first roughed that drawing out, then cleaned it up, and colored it in Flash. Flash is great for crispy quality! Wade, I've been using Tria markers and Prismacolor pencil crayons. The Tria's are about $6-$7 CAD, but after you have the pen you can buy refills for every color. The refill bottles fill the pens up quite a few times too, so it cuts down on the cost. Having the three tips, like JeffRM mentioned, is great too (I only use the chisel tip though). I was never overly fond of the Prismacolor pens though. They always dry up fast :( , and the color selection is smaller. Tria also makes a brush tip adaptor and a airbrush type pen. Has anyone tried them? Some other cool felts are the Staedtler Mars 3000 duel brush tip pens. I likem' cause they're also water-soluble, so you can get a water color type effect. I'll see if I can post a sample of them up soon. Cheers

WOAH! I haev a set of the Mars 3000's that my folks gave me about 14 years ago! I just checked them, and they all still work (LOL)! I actually did the line work in a couple commercials for "Young Drivers of Canada" years ago with the black Mars 3000, to simulate a 'Chinese Brush' look. I am going to have to I am going to have to go out and find a set of the 7 buck markers though. What I like best about them is the smooth quality of them. They do not get darker and darker (or do it much less) than your average markers. The go on clean, solid, and streak free!
Thanks, Graphite. Now I am still really interested in Damage's answer. His renders look SMASHING as well! I hope he says it is something other than Photoshop.... Then I won't feel like such an idiot, unable to pain that well in the software...
Cheers

Is it just me or does the undo button in photoshop rule.......
cjaye
06-23-2004, 07:46 PM
LOL!!!! Undo in Photoshop and ... every other program I own. I've entertained the idea of a short story about a chick who relies on it so much, it's her first instinct to use it in real life. A little autobiographical, that one. Pity it'd be a one-trick pony story.

Thanks, Damage for the info. I was afraid that it might have been photoshop. Unfortunately, when I render something like that in photoshop, it looks too flat (a bit too cartoony. I too have been playing with painter 8, and this is what I came up with. Still needs some work, but I feel it to be a good start. Painter is a pretty nice program, because you can get that traditional feeling to it, by selecting a toothy paper, using chalk, etc. I coloured it first with Mars 3000 makers, and then touched it up with painter.

Thanks, D-man. It is a touch more realistic than I normally do (actually, MUCH more relaistic than I normally do), but I thought it might be a good idea to do some of this stuff for my portfolio, which completely lacks in realism, with the exception of my life drawing stuff.
To be honest, I am not totally taken by the Mars 3000's. They get pretty botchy when you go over your lines, and that really annoys me. I am trying to find a deal on the tria markers... I LOVE them!

you'd think i'd just keep my sketches to myself, but NO WAY. i've been turned on to the power of putting stuff out there publicly (you know, versus waiting til a consensus of your closest friends gives the thumbs up). it's a terrifically bad habit of writers, to hone and polish and - oh hell, totally revise - and THEN drop a manuscript oh-so-casually in front of someone with a cavalier "well, if you want to read it. i mean, it's just a draft." :)
so here's the epic tale. yesterday early a.m., i dashed off this animal to test logo layout on a website. didn't hesitate - just posted the link *** eeek!**. and got LOTS of response. and NOW it's someone's logo. Huh.
thanks.

Hey guys how it going. I hope good.
Danimation great work as usuall. I realy like the layout and use of color in your last two. I envy you. Re: the monkey I do plan on coloring them as soon as i do some revisions and they get approved. They are for a kids website thats supposed to promote community thrue stories games and such.
Thanks for the comments Wade. The cakes are iced with Drawing frosting which is just over whiped whip cream. It gets a to be a bit more firmer and can stand up to the airbrush when i paint. Not much tho if i get to close i sometimes blow the frosting rigth off the cake. Btw the over whip whipped cream is then mixed with some buttercream so that the cream will retain the color or else it would just fade away. I first start out by outlining the subject on the cake with some really thick ediable gel paste. I then finishe it with food coloring airbrushed on the top. I have wrecked many a cake. Hope that answers the cake Q and A. I consider this my waitrising job till i land an animation gig or make money off my comic book. Either one would be fine. For now tho i get paid to paint and that's cool.
Well enough rambling to the point of the thread now. This one i did today while riding the bus to work. I figured i had to do something kind of vage since the stinking bus wouldn't stop moving. Good times. :p
Dooouuuu I forgot to attach the image.

I love Justice League. I think it's well-animated for its class of TV show and there's no better writing in the genre on television. It makes the show that it can tell a good story so well so consistently.
If we're being technical, J'onn could be the subject of all these pictures, just in various morphs, no?
I will definitely be scrounging for stuff tomorrow to add on to here. Or better yet make some hehe Thanks for the warm reception....Now if I could just get it to move lol j/k
I answer to your question Dan that is indeed my sister. She's a model/actress who lives a split life between here in PA and a small place in Manhattan. I guarantee you you'll be hearing more about her soon enough. She's already been in Maxim (for exposure, that is), Bijon perfume, Quaker State oil, etc...So she's on firm ground...nowhere to go but up =) Thanks for asking...And in case you were wondering that took at least two hours (it's actually the only not-from-today one, I did it last summer...it scanned a bit weird but even in real life when you look hard it ceases to be as awesome...luckily my portraiture has improved)...

Geez, I have been gone only a couple days and I am not even on the last 2 pages here! But it's great to see that more people have joined in the fun.
This is goin back a ways, but Scoob, glad you enjoy my creature ideas... In pondering a name for my last sketch, I came up with 'Snarggle.' hmmm... maybe you can think of a better name?
Well, I could tell you all how great each of your individual drawings are, but... I just did! Stellar work!
Ok, here's my next creation... I've named him 'Frazzz' ... yes, with 3 z's. :D

Just a question Dan, I've been gone for a while trying to finish up my website and I am always checking back to see what you guys are up too, I really like how you colour your characters and bg's and how the line is coloured, your drawing always look really crisp, whenever I colour the line using photoshop, it doesn't look as good. What program are you using to get that coloured line.(Illustator?) I've never used illustraot but I know that it is like photoshop and that it is vector based. Is that why people use illustrator because the paths/sections are already selected to fill in with colour? All I know is that I did a bg without the line showing and it took forever in photoshop.
Danimation
07-23-2004, 04:48 PM
Hey Jeff, good to hear from you! All of the bg's I've posted were done in an Illustrator/Photoshop combo. I take the rough, then outline all the shapes. I like to start from the back to front. Then I select the outlines, fill them and get rid of the outline itself. After I have all the shapes colored, I take it into shop and add lights and textures. For the characters like the JL guys, Rotten Bananas and such, I use Flash MX. I start off by importing the rough into Flash, then Outlining the drawing using the line tool. I then change all of the lines to fills, then taper the heck out of the lines. Then I color the lines and shapes accordingly. Flash is great for crisp work, as well as Illustrator. I tried to color lines in photoshop using my clean-up work done in pencil. What a nightmare! The lines always get pixled and crap! ! Anyway, I find it a bit easier to do the characters in Flash though. Maybe I'm just more comfortable with that program. I hope that answers your question? If not send me a pm! Cheers

Dan, wow, your BG pieces really have a fantastic style. It was neat to hear how you create them, so thank you Jeff for asking about it. Can't wait to see more!
Ok, another random drawing. I have no idea what it is or why he is in a cup, but after drawing it, it reminded me of a creepy Simpson's character...
JeffRM
07-25-2004, 09:30 AM
Thanks dan, that helps, maybe I'll try using the illustrator way, I am not yet into using flash yet, I'm still learning adobe go live and next is maya. Your ways seem alot easier than how I was doing it. I was spending forever fixing up all the lines, it got a little repetitive, later

(1)car scene i was doin but i messed up on the bike girl so on (2) i went from a different perspective, there's no story or motive just drew what was at the top of my head..(3) is just some knights tale thingy, i like the bathroom layout dan did so i was gonna do a funny with knights and bathrooms, i mean, how did they go? metal zippers? hee hee, o well...

As gross as it sounds, given the time involved and the dire circumstances (ie you have to go but you're in a clearing with 1500 other people about to want you dead) that most of the "going" "went" down the leg...=P

Hey there gang. I'm finally back from SDCC. Wow what a blast. I missed a lot since i was gone. You guys are doing a great job.
SD was fun but i'm glad to be back. I ran into an Artist i never knew about. I probably saw his work but never knew who he was. Dean Yeagle, i bought his book and got a cool sketch. The book inspired me to try to mimic his style to see if some of his talant rubs off on me. So here are my mocks of some of his beutiful girls.

Then I read your notes saying that you were emulating his work. You fooled me, and I've been following his work for quite a while! Sweet job D. His style of drawing women is outta this world. I love what you did with it, you added a sweet twist o' Damage. Here's today doodle. I thought that I'd better steer away from the super heros for a bit. Cheers

07-27-2004, 07:58 AM
Jeff scott campbell is one of the worst artists ever.
he clearly have problems in art that needs an immediant attention such as how to draw faces..etc.
you want artists, checkout Adam Kubert and his brother, mark bagley, john romita junior, ed benes (pretty ok artist, i like his style) .

ofcourse i know Jim Lee, he rocks as well :)
J.Scott Campbell,
i don't hate him as a person ofcourse!
but, just because he can draw girls makes him a good artist?
yes he can draw they way he do, i never stated that he doesn't, but he does it in really ugly way, well thats my opinion of course, but i have seen his work, and its not how it should be done in any comic book.

I drink but i never drink to the point that I'll get a hangover but it must have been some food that i ate the night before. Just think your head is pounding you got to sell your stuff and your giving away free sketches with a purchase. At about 3pm and this was going on from around 9am, I finally couldn't draw any more and I ended up vomiting behind the booth. Good times. I must say that that is the worst SD Comic con experience that I have ever had. I had to go to sleep in the van parked in the lot.

08-10-2004, 05:20 PM
The bg is just some well placed radial gradients set against White. The shading on the bridge itself is a transparent gradient placed over the original fill (copy and paste in place fill on another layer, change to transparent gradient...etc). The moon's aura is a radial gradient, and it's shadows are radial gradients placed using the same technique as the bridge.
Sorry about the lengthy description; I wasn't very sure what you were referring to.

Well hopefully I'll be able to keep this up now that i got a little of free time. What am I saying there should alway be time to sketch a little something right. Right. Okay untill then Lates.

My congratulations to you and your wife Damage! That's wonderful news! What is the wee ones name? Great work too. I remember the monkeys you did a while back. Is it for the same company? Congrats again! BoStock, schweet monsters. You have a very cool style to your work, I really enjoyed the colored werewolf as well. Here is today's diddy. It's in the same series as Rotten Bananas. Cheers
