Hi there,

I would like to know your views on which university has the best teaching and overall structure regarding their animation course.

I have been doing extensive research myself and have come upon one university which seems to be leading in the field; Bournemouth Uni.

All recommendations/views will be much appreciated, thank you.

Hi there, letme pass my knowledge on from one student to another, Bournmouth is a really good animation uni and is recognised world wide though it is very hard to get into, if u are planning to appy for that uni, I suggest u have alot of life drawing, as I went to an interview there and my tutors suggested to take only my best life drawings, this I regretted as they were more interested in the life drawing than anything else. I had a look around the uni and its looks great. II got rejected prob because of my lack of life drawing and I went to University of westminster, a course that is just being established, but since we have proffessional animators teaching us now the course has picked up.. Good luck and if u wanna know more about animation at Westminster do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you Rannettez.

It just so happens I've been flicking through the prospectus of Westminister Uni and I've booked an open day with them. Although I'm a little reluctant towards it since they seem to be geared towards traditional animation rarther then computer animation which I'm interested in.

Do you have msn or any other chat client? Add me on ' ' or anyone for that matter who has info/curious regarding animation unis in the UK :)

Hey there, university of westminster is leaning towards the traditional animation because our head tutor is a traditional animator but do not let that put u off, as they do cater for the students who want to specilise in 3d, for instance we have been taught Lightwave in the second year and most of my year produced 3d animation films. They cater for all tastes and the course is getting better every year. It is in harrow, just 20 minutes outside of London.

regardless of what type of animation you want to end up doing. a solid education in traditional animation is a must. other classical art skills are essential too, such as sculpting and painting.

southampton have tons of support for all animation mediums and even buy 3dsmax for their students to keep. but they make all their students do one whole year of traditional drawn animation. they must learn the principles first.

i hear portsmouth is running a pretty good game also. i know several people that work both at southampton and portsmouth. and they are all really dedicated to their art.

your best bet is to go along to the schools and chat with the staff and get a feel for their philosophy on animation and go from there.

I can recommend the University of Teesside (http://www.scm.tees.ac.uk/).

The courses are good (with drawing for animation), they have a lot of international industry contacts that descend on the University for the Animex (http://www.thedigitalcity.org/html/frames.html) Fesitval in Jan/Feb. Cost of living is low but unfortunately the Middlesbrough area isn't very desirable to live in(I commuted there from Newcastle).
