4x5 intuos is a good size for starters. The only major difference of course is the smaller drawing area. And also the fact that is has slightly less sensitivity compared to the 6x8.

I own both 4x5 and 6x8 and honestly, the difference is barely noticeable. I'm using dual-monitor on my machine so i only use a portion of my 6x8 tablet on monitor#1 (the other half of my tablet's drawing area is used to navigate monitor#2). It does take some time getting used to and I know some artists who bought a tablet but hardly ever use it.

My suggestion is if you're going to use it everyday at work/home, like I, get the bigger 6x8 since you'll eventually want to get a bigger tablet (i was happy with 4x5 for a good 5 years, however). But if you're only going to use it once or twice a week for an hour or two, save the money and get a 4x5.

I barely use my mouse anymore. Even now when I navigate in Windows, I use my tablet (well, also because I have carpal tunnel).

Hope this helps
