Hi everyone!
I got a free day from school today, and thought "Hey, why not start a thread?" So here it is. This is just random stuff I've been working on, but if you have any suggestions, spit'em out!
Thanks for stopping by.

Heh-- Thanks guys :)
Here's some sketches for a character I'm working on. I appologize for the poor quality of the pictures--our scanner's been acting funky lately.

Just in case you're wondering, that's a cigar in his mouth.

Aiyah! My poor, neglected daily sketch thread!
That's life, I guess. Here's a couple of sketches I knocked off before going to bed. I'm trying to improve my life drawing skills, but somehow my sketches always come out looking somewhat cartoonish. One of these days I'll figure it out. If you have any suggestions, shoot! I need all the help I can get...

BTW, this character is appearing in a shortfilm I'm working on called "The New Kid." Here's a link to that thread if anyone's interested:

Thanks DIEMERAS.
Yesterday I checked out "Human Anatomy for Artists" (Eliot Goldfinger) from the library, and I've been drawing like mad. I only have fifteen days before the book's due back again! Here's what I came up with tonight.
(Note: The last sketch is incomplete, of course. It was an experiment in proportions.)

Hello hello hello,
Here's the sketches for this week.
Sketch#1:
In continuing with my attempts at life drawing, I drew sketched this guy. He was standing in the Sam's Club checkout line, Ozzie shades, tie-dye shirt and everything. Sitar music, anyone?

Sketch #2:
Obviously not life-drawing, what the heck. Actually, life drawing is helping me to "think below the surface" more when I'm cartooning. It's becoming easier to imagine bone structure, muscles, etc...

Sketch #3:
Here's a character I was working on last night. He's some kind of prehistoric bird--though he could be a roadrunner if I changed his default posture. Again, bone structure plays a major part here.

Some more sketches of this little guy are displayed below.

cool drawings man...i like your bird, i think it's the hardest thing creating characters to look "right" did a nice job, and on sams club dude sketch...do you just sit somewhere and draw people as they come? id try this method but id kinda feel weird staring at somebody drawing them up.

Thanks Powerglove.
Yeah, it can be awkward staring at someone, and drawing up their profile (and even more awkward if you get caught!). I've found that it's easiest to do sketching out in a crowded area; there you'll be less conspicuous and can avoid embarassing situations.
In the case of the guy in the checkout line, I did most of that sketch from memory. (It was impossible to finish the drawing while he was there--he left within minutes). In this kind of situation, I usually just sketch out the basic pose, while making a mental note of the details (expression, clothing, etc...).
Thanks for your comments,

Thanks, Blinkme.
Today I was flipping through some of my old sketchbooks, and found this cartoon. I used to be good at thinking up gags... I think art education has spoilt my sense of humor :(
It's the catch of the day:

that's an awesome little bird! i really like his design. it would be cool to see more drawings showing different expressions so we can get a feel for his personality. personally, i think he would work better as a prehistoric bird than a road runner, but it's your character! good stuff.

Thanks for your comments Brien (and nice avatar, lol). The bird is actually just one of the random characters I draw when I'm bored, and I've never really given much thought into his personality. Now might be a good time to start! I'll try to have something posted by wednesday--maybe with some expressions and gestures.
Thanks again,

Nice work. I particularly like the way the bird posture and expression lets you know exactly what his emotion is.

Thanks blupaje,
Ironically, I'm having a lot of trouble getting the bird's different facial expressions to look right. I never realized that beaks could be so hard to handle! I think its time for me to do some research... Maybe I'll look up Zazu from the Lion King (his beak looks close to what I'm aiming for).
I'll post some more of this character once I manage to come out with something remotely decent!
Thanks again,

Here's the latest sketch: an experiment in perspective drawing. Yes, I know horses don't have cloven hooves, but this is a pegasus . And besides, it could be a donkey crossbreed  .

Here's more life drawing stuff. My girl heads tend to look like guy heads with long hair--but today I finally drew a girl head that actually looks like a girl head! A GIRL HEAD!
So I slapped a body and wings on her, and voila :D
