Doubt

I need to convert a couple of mpeg4 movie files to a format that requires the least amount of effort for viewers of my website.
I've checked around a bit and it seems like Quicktime 7 has some nasty reviews and may not even be able to do this. I was thinking mpeg4 to mov or an avi file. I also have a copy of the films that I recorded from my vhs origionals with a dvd recorder, I don't think I can do anything with these though.
It yould be great if anyone has any advice on this or if anyone can vouch for or suggest an alternative to Quicktime7.
Here's a link to my site, I'm still working out bugs and details so bear with me, as you can see, my demo reel file is huge and the student film files are not recognizeable (at least to me)
Any tips are more than welcome.
