What Makes a Reel?

I am a young artist currently living in Michigan but moving to San Francsico in the fall to look for animation work. I have never had formal training in animation so I am very curious about putting together a good reel and portfolio. Advice?

Don't let the date bother you because all of the information is still very relevant. I think the only difference now is that DVD's are more common.
