Rest in Peace, Alex Toth.

Receiving word now that Alex Toth passed away this weekend.


This saddens me greatly because, if I can point to any ONE artist as a inspiration/influence to my life's work, it is Alex Toth.
More than any other artist, the cartoons he designed, storyboarded and contributed to at Hanna Barbera and other studios/publishers are the ones that caught my eye as a child. Space Ghost, Birdman and the Galaxy trio, Herculoids, Shazzan, Young Samson and Goliath, Jonny Quest, Sealab 2020--I lived and breathed those shows...all of them.
I can say that I am here, as a cartoonist, because of Alex Toth.


Rest in Peace, good sir--and thank you for the adventures!

Very much respect to Alex Toth, despite all the 80s craze, his designs remained popular throughout the years. At times I can remember those shows, Space Ghost included as being the only hour on weekends that would present good form.

My main connection is his work on the early Warren titles-- Creepy and Eerie. But I watched and loved most of his cartoon work, too. He just had a real knack for visual story-telling, and understood cool, iconic graphics like very few before or since. Not many people have influenced as many aspects of cartooning in their own time as Toth, and at this late date, it's unlikely anyone else will.

He was one of the greats.
