creativem, I think the safest way to start is to ask around amongst professionals who live and work next to you. They'll probably be more in touch with the more actual information than us here.

As for software, Adobe Photoshop and After Effects are a great start :) whatever you do (Flash, animation, 3d) you'll need them both.
