I think I've heard enough from this forum on this topic. And I've done some digging around myself outside of AWN. When I asked about 2D dieing I've always left out Flash ..because it stays engaging by marrying itself to the web. But outside of that 2D is dieing!
The argument that .."its about the story" ...is pure fart! That was always a given .. thats like telling a basketball player they need to get the ball in the basket ...or a football player that they need to get in the end zone ... its a given ..its understood.
I read books from Richard Williams, Preston Blair ... they tell you the basics, how to draw your character from different angles, etc ...but they don't talk too much about story ...because its understood that your going to put the lessons learned into context.
People spend hours days weeks months practcing how to draw an authentic walk cycle ... they understand in the end they need to have that character walk from point A to B for a reason!! I mean ...DUH-HUH??!!
What people want to hear in these forum is the delivery. See ... I can give scripted material to anybody do tell a joke on stage .and it will suck or bomb ... but if I take that same material and give it to Jay Leno ..or Eddie Murphy ... the audience will holding their sides laughing!!
They have got a delivery ... they have got talent and you don't!!
Same way for an artist or animator ... a given storyline ..even average can be engaging with a great delivery ..and thats why you practrice ... thats why you try to learn the lessons passed down from the old animators .. how to do takes, how to create follow-through, line-of-action ... all that! And thats why in my case you ponder 2D vs 3D.
I'm surprised to hear in this forum people advocating ...you know what ... after you've learned and mastered all that ..some guy with no talent and a great-story ..is going to make out bettter than you!! Thats so deflating!!
I'm just surprised hearing well ... "its all about the story" .. in this forum. As if you need some script handed down from heaven. Most people can formulate story in their heads based on their every day situation. If you wanted to do a 5 minute piece of animation ...just go to the store ...go buy gas or bread... you'll find something thats funny by just being observant.
And as a kid ..as a teenager you've always had your own wild fantasies, you can clean that up and create a movie out of that. How many hollywood block busters are genuinely new material really? Most are offshoot from prior hits ..or offshoot from other movies that flopped because they had ..."bad delivery"!!
That said .. 3D facilitates a better delivery than 2D !! Yeah you know line-of-action, squash-and stretch, takes, follow-through, anticipation and all that ... you deliver that in either medium 3D will come out on top on 2D.
Its just more compelling .. thats all.

But there's a kind of evolution a piece needs to go through that starts with thumbnails and storyboarding. Flipping between two keys is also pretty essential if you want the line of action to really pop in an appealing way. WHat happens a lot with CG stuff is "animation" gets defined as just moving something around on the screen, and all the steps required to bring it to life get skipped. The results are robotic and lifeless. But then a lot of clients might not know the difference. So you can learn how to use Maya and get work. But eventually that will be like building a house that suddenly starts to collapse and you have to frantically try to shovel a foundation underneath of it.

I will disagree with you here. I surely don't know what goes on the back rooms of any studio ...but I see the end results ..and its great stuff. I watched a feature on cable about the making of "over the edge" ..and how Toy Story was put together ..and they went through the pains taking task of fleshing out their ideas on paper, creating plastic models etc. And the end results reflected that work. If nothing else these studios put out great looking work. Because of your line of work like me I'd expect that you watch these movies a bit differently than the average joe ... and I am impressed with range and complexity of movements I see.
Look, your argument that these studios are filled with kiss-asses at the top is something I'll agree with you on. But thats corporate America period ..something you'll find whether your an animator, engineer or accountant! And yes many of those people are dismissive of ideas they find counter to their own agenda... this is why I chimed in on the thread regarding trying out the internet rather than trying get a resume in front of the kiss-asses for a job!
Face it folks ...2D is dieing!
