Well, with most television cartoons, its easier to market towards children if the show features children. For example, Fox made a big stink on Batman: The Animated Series about having Robin included in every episode, so the kids could have a character to relate to. Luckily, that didn't do much to detract from the dark nature and overall bad-assness of the show.
A more poisonous example I can bring up would be Pinky and the Brain. The show garnered a large adult following, which distressed the WB network because they were selling thier Saturday morning block as little kiddie fodder. So what do they do? They take the most annoying kid character from Tiny Toons and plop her in the series, thus creating "Pinky, Elmyra, and the Brain": one of the most hideous and flat-out BAD ideas in the history of ideas. So thats why AotKT gave thier characters a drink from the fountain of youth. Its all about selling, not integrity (although I question how much artistic integrity was in AotKT to begin with). ;o) Jo

I have to agree with Joanna Davidovich. There are times when a good idea is ran into the ground by a committee.
